As humans, we’re often remarkably bad at regulating our own learning. We ignore research-backed strategies for effective learning like varying our study environments or interleaving topics because they often appear to slow the rate of learning in the short-run. What’s more, our schools are in the practice of testing knowledge, as opposed to testing whether we have the skills to learn, even though learning how to learn is more important than ever. “Ethiopia’s government has become serious about investing in education. It doubled its budgetary allocation to the sector between 2000-13. It has one of the highest student enrollment rates in Africa. Students enrolled grew from 3-18 million within 1996-2015.
One of the challenges is a lack of quality teachers. The worst performing students are admitted into the country’s teachers colleges.
Success will depend on leveraging the portability of mobile devices to deliver educational content to those with little access to the internet and the survival of technology hubs and incubators and increased support from the government.”
“Software developers believe that the technology behind automated AI scoring programs is good enough to deploy in schools and help grade student essays.
One expert "says computers ‘learn’ what’s considered good writing by analyzing essays graded by humans. Then, the automated programs score essays themselves by scanning for those same features.”
Several states already use automated grading on their standardized tests, but many teachers are unconvinced. Critics also worry it will change the way teachers teach. The technology may be “demonstrating proficiency”, but experts say, it’s still got plenty of “room for improvement.”
